Sharp, healthy hedges across the Eastern Suburbs

Whether it's a row of lilly pillies in Bondi, buxus framing a Paddington terrace, a murraya screen in Vaucluse, or star jasmine climbing a Bronte fence line, I trim hedges of every size and species across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Photinias, viburnums, pittosporums, gardenias, westringias — they all need slightly different handling, and I shape each one by hand or with battery-powered hedgers, which are quiet, precise, and easy on neighbours.

I'm Matthew, and Eastside Gardens is a one-man operation, so you get the same person every visit — someone who knows your garden and treats every hedge based on what it actually needs. I can take on one-off jobs or set up a regular schedule that keeps your hedges looking sharp year-round.

  • It depends on the species and how sharp you want it kept. Fast growers like lilly pilly, murraya, and photinia look their best with a light trim every 6 to 8 weeks through the warmer months. Buxus is slower growing, but if you want it kept tight and formal, it can need attention every 6 weeks too. Sydney hedges keep growing for most of the year, so regular light trims will give you a much better result than one heavy cut. I'll recommend a schedule based on what you've actually got in your garden and how you'd like it to look.

  • In most cases, yes. Lilly pillies, photinias, and murrayas all respond well to a hard cut and bounce back quickly. Buxus and camellias are a bit more sensitive — I'd usually bring those back gradually over two or three trims rather than one big cut, so they don't get stressed. If you want to send me a photo, I can let you know what to expect before I come out.

  • I gather all the cuttings as I trim and load them into your green bin. If there's more than it can hold, I'll take the rest away for an additional fee — just let me know what suits you.

  • Yes — a lot of my work is in Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee and the surrounding coastal suburbs. Hedges near the beach deal with salt spray, strong winds, and sandy soil, so I'm careful to avoid trimming during heat waves, which can scorch freshly cut foliage. Westringia and coastal rosemary handle these conditions best, but most established hedges do fine with the right care.

  • I work right across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs — Maroubra, Malabar, South Coogee, Bondi, Bronte, Clovelly, Coogee, Randwick, Kensington, Queens Park, Waverley, Woollahra, Paddington, Double Bay, Edgecliff, Rose Bay, Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse, Dover Heights, Watsons Bay and everywhere in between. If you're nearby and not on the list, give me a call — chances are I can help.
